Let’s say I have a relay team designated "to run the race set before me" (Hebrews 12:1).
The "race" could be to impact others for Christ. The "runners" could be Praying, Worshiping, Showing Lovingkindness, and Speaking the Word.
As training gets underway it becomes obvious that one of the runners is the weak link. For purposes of illustration let's say that runner is Speaking the Word. Try as she might, Speaking just can't seem to muster the strength needed to do her part for the team effort to succeed. The other three runners seem so strong and confident, but poor Speaking struggles along getting more and more discouraged at her inability to contribute to the success of the team. Finally she dejectedly brings herself before the Coach and admits she is too weak to participate.
The Coach then bids Speaking farewell and steps into her position Himself. Now the "weak link" is the strongest of all.
II Corinthians 12:9-10 (NIV) ...He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses...For when I am weak, then I am strong.
In fact, as the training progresses the other three runners can't help but notice that the strength in which they had put such confidence is actually quite weak relative to that of the Coach who seems to run His leg of the race so effortlessly. They finally have to admit that if they stepped aside and let Coach run their legs of the race, victory would be assured. It is much more difficult for these strong, confident runners to step aside than it had been for weak, insecure Speaking, but when they humble themselves and do so, and let Coach fill their positions, victory is at hand.
